Let me walk you through some of my "frames" and share with you what has inspired me to create them. Someone told me after seeing them that "the pieces go where my whimsy takes me." I could not have chosen better words.
I have certainly followed my whimsy. It has taken me further and further into a world of images, ideas and "things", but more than anything else, it has taken me into a world where you can let your imagination run wild.
The medium I used
BASURA: (in Mexican/Spanish) Garbage, junk, rubbish...Anything discarded
by some and collected by others. "Basura" brought back to my studio and
used "on" or "as" the FRAMES to tell a tale. Some of the ideas were looking
for a frame and some of the frames inspired the ideas.
I will start with my "Hommage a... Series". They have obviously been "dedicated" to the ones who have put the ideas into my head!
Leonardo (no need for a last name) has to be a great inspirer.
NOW, NOW LEONARDO, "What makes Mona Smile" is questioning Mona's real
identity. Was it a self-portrait in drag? Ever since X-rays have
probed Mona Lisa, the speculation has been "was she or wasn't he".
"Hot Seat, LHOOQ" is a double homage to Leonardo and Duchamps. Duchamps' interpretation of the Mona Lisa included the initials LHOOQ under her portrait which, in French is a double entendre which sounds like what can be best translated into "she has a hot ass..."
"PE" Homage a Morimura is about a painting by the Japanese artist, Yasumasa Morimura, who has "appropriated" famous masters' paintings by becoming the 'subject' as in Olympia and the Slave (top of Frame). The rest is up to your imagination.
The last "frame" I'll address here is "My Magic Carpet (mon tapis volant) S". It is very personal and I will tell you a little about it: I have a passion for oriental carpets which I acquired from my father who was collector of things of beauty. Lucky me, I basically grew up on them! You can travel on them in your imagination and sometimes they take you to a magic place like San Miguel.
